Pool and Lane Ettiquette
- Please shower before entering the pool.
- Please ensure your arrival on pool deck is at least 10 minutes prior to start of the session. This will allow you time to socialize and help set up the pool for each workout.
- Please help set up the pool for each workout:
- putting up poles & flags
- putting out kickboards
- setting up sandwich boards (those that say “programs in progress” etc.)
- Please remember to follow standard swimming etiquette in the pool including 1) prompt arrival, 2) Non-disruptive behavior, and 3) Proper and safe swimming practices
- If you are late, please join the workout at the same point as the rest of the swimmers in your lane.
- Within each lane, swimmers should arrange themselves for each set: fastest to slowest.
- The lead swimmer in each lane sets the pace & intervals for each set; ensuring each swimmer has adequate time for rest.
- Ideally allow 5-10 seconds between swimmers.
- Swim in a circle; outbound against the lane rope & inbound up the middle; staying on your side of the double lane.
- To pass the swimmer in front of you, touch their toes. This lets them know they should stop at the end of the length and allow you to pass. (Note: if you do this frequently, please consider moving up a lane.)
- Please refrain from passing mid length!
- As you approach turns, cautiously ease over the black T on the wall so you can push off in a straight line.
- Try to swim the workout as posted but sit out a repeat or set if you need to.
- If you are sitting out or doing a different stroke from your lane mates, move aside to the lane rope and stay out of their way.
- When finishing a swim, move aside to the lane rope, so the swimmer behind you can touch the wall!
- When using paddles, please be aware of where your hands are in relation to other swimmers.
- Do not swim over people. If another swimmer is slower than you are, please follow the passing etiquette.
- Be aware of where your lane mates are (and where the wall is).
- At the end of each workout, please help clean up the pool:
- Take down poles & flags, and put away in equipment room
- Remove kickboards from deck and put in equipment room
- Take down sandwich boards & stack against wall
- WSM members are often given a ‘grace’ period to use the sauna, steam room and hot tub. This benefit is a privilege not an entitlement of membership. Please do not abuse the facilities by overstays or horseplay or the privilege may be revoked by the coach, at his discretion or by JDF staff.
A failure to comply with standard swimming and WSM Pool & Lane Etiquette could result in our coach, at his/her discretion, exercising his right to refuse the member access to a specific practice and/or the Executive Officers’ decision to cancel a swimmer’s membership.
